Negative feelings, such as depression over losing a job, being rejected by a loved one or having financial problems may trigger 'stress munches' - a psychological need to eat to cope with out-of-control emotions.
Over time, this leads to excessive weight gain, making depression worse.
Instead of eating a bag of crisps to deal with stress, try practising relaxation techniques instead, such as yoga or meditation. It slows the heart rate, reduces anxiety and even helps burn a few calories.
It also boosts serotonin, a brain chemical that influences how you feel or behave. Just 30 minutes of meditation or yoga can de-stress the body, and it won't cause you to gain weight either.
